The importance of cleaning saws well before using them in machinery

Fortunately, there are more and more saw specialists aware of the importance of cleaning the saws well before putting them in the sharpening machine. That’s because keeping them clean allows us to save on coolant and obtain better precision in sharpening.

In this article, we explain why.

A cleaner saw makes the coolant (either coolant or cutting oil) cleaner and lasts longer by not breaking down dirt in the sharpening machine coolant. Therefore, by cleaning the saws well we save on coolant costs.

On the other hand, the remains of resin or other impurities can make a thickness in the body of the saw that affects us when holding the saw with the jaws. By cleaning them, we can avoid these remains and achieve a much more precise sharpening. This is especially important for trapezoidal tooth saws, since debris can make us more easily move the tooth to one side in some part of the saw, later affecting the quality of the final cut of the saw.

How do we clean the saws?

To clean the saws it is very important NOT TO USE THE METAL PIN BRUSH, as they will damage the saw and give it a coarse appearance if it is scratched.

From ELITE, we recommend cleaning the saw in three steps:

Pass a rag or air gun to the saw. Thus the particles that are loose such as sawdust are detached from it, avoiding an unnecessary accumulation of dirt in the detergent of the cleaning machine.

Introduce the saws in the cleaning machine. In our LAVAmaq line of machines it is usually necessary between 10 and 15 minutes if the water-detergent ratio is the recommended one. When the machine is opened, the tools dry themselves, removing the water from the saw so that it does not come into contact with the oil from the sharpening machine.

NOTE: In milling cutter, the washing time must be especially watched, because, depending on the quality of the paint, it can be removed.

ATTENTION: It is important to watch the washing time in aluminum parts. Depending on the amount of detergent and the washing time, washing can attack aluminum.

  1. Remove the saws and stack them for further sharpening. It is convenient to separate the saws in which new teeth must be replaced from the rest, since in these saws we will have to weld and rectify these new teeth. It is very important that in this step the saws do not touch each other so that the body is not scratched and mainly the teeth are not damaged when colliding with each other. For this, we can use cardboard or similar as separators.

With these steps we will have the saws perfectly clean for sharpening.

Our ELITE cleaning machines, LAVAmaq line, provide a perfect and fast cleaning of the saws allowing you to save on coolant costs and maintain a high quality sharpening.

We have several models depending on the diameter of the saws that have to be cleaned:
